What causes Rosacea?

copy link
Many Britons suffer from a range of skin problems, from acne to rarer skin conditions, like Rosacea. D. Thomas Clinic understand the discomfort and undesirable nature of these types of skin conditions. As such, we've created some advice to help people understand what Rosacea is, the symptoms it causes, and the treatments or care routines available to manage the problem.  Rosacea is chronic, meaning that it's a long-term recurring problem. There is no one set of symptoms that clients report having because there are four subsets of rosacea, but among them are:
  • Persistent Flush
  • Redness of the skin
  • Visible blood vessels
  • Swelling
  • Acne-like breakouts
  • Thickening of the skin
  • Bumpy texturisation
  • Dryness
  • Swollen eyelids
  • Irritation
Debbie Thomas, skin and laser expert at D.Thomas Clinic say on the matter: "If you suspect that you may have rosacea, it is essential to seek a professional diagnosis from a dermatologist. The symptoms of rosacea can resemble other skin conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis and acne, making an accurate diagnosis crucial for proper treatment."

What causes Rosacea?

The truth of the matter is, despite research being made into the condition, there's been no definitive answer on what exactly causes it, due to its complexity. That being said, it's considered experts to be brought on by genetics, the environment, and factors involving your immune system.

Rosacea Management Techniques

Despite its chronic nature, there are ways to manage symptoms or even minimize their occurrences. Whilst not all of these may apply to your specific type of Rosacea, here are ways that could help. Record your triggers: Everyone's body is different and there are several different subsets of the condition. As a result, you should make a mental note of what triggers it and adjust how you approach those situations.  Manage your stress levels: Stress is a bodily response to perceptions of challenges and threats that are too much for a person to handle. Whilst stress can enhance focus and performance when you need it, the hormonal changes that come along with stress have been known to worsen a range of physical conditions, such as skin conditions. As a result, it's recommended to make changes to your life that improve stress levels, such as exercise, eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and practicing yoga.  Protect your skin: We believe skincare is always worthwhile, but with this condition, it becomes near essential. You should use non-abrasive products and avoid anything that could cause friction against your skin, as it may cause a breakout. Also, make sure to use sunscreen when the sun is out.  Regulate your body temperature: Hot temperatures can trigger symptoms. As a result, it's best to incorporate body cooling practices if you live in hotter regions on Earth, such as wearing fewer layers and drinking more water.  Get expert help: There's only so much that online information can tell you, as this information applies to a general range of people. Telling an expert about your individual experiences will help toidentify causes and tailor a plan for you.

What topical products can I use to manage Rosacea?

Whilst we recommend making several small adjustments to your life to keep your condition under control, it's also a good idea to apply topical products to your skin to keep it under control. Some of those products are as follows:  Niacinamide: The anti-inflammatory properties of this medicine target and reduces redness and inflammation. It also restores the skin's barrier, which Rosacea compromises, and keeps it moisturized. It also possesses anti-oxidant properties that protect against environmental stressors on the skin, which tend to cause Rosacea outbreaks.  Azelaic Acid: This medication comes in the form of a gel or cream. It is an anti-inflammatory medicine that has bacteria-killing properties that also sheds dead skin cells. It is particularly effective against papules and pustules.  Ivermectin: Ivermectin is a cream that is also anti-inflammatory, but it also targets and kills parasites. You may be unaware of this, but humans are host to many parasitic micro-organisms, and the ones that live within hair follicles named Demodex mites are believed to be instrumental in rosacea.

What can D. Thomas Clinic do for you?

The first thing that we would recommend is that you book a consultation with us. Nonetheless, you must understand that whilst we have a range of treatments that can help Rosacea's symptoms, it is a chronic condition that cannot be completely cured. However, much like with acne and a range of other skin conditions, our DNA Essential Skin Grade 1 Treatment targets affected areas of the skin and reduces the appearance of redness, papules, pustules, and other symptoms. This treatment is one of our most popular and has been instrumental in improving the skin health of many of our clients.  Overall, Rosacea is a tricky condition to treat, and like all of our clients, we highly recommend you book a consultation with us so that we can identify what treatments and steps to take to improve the condition.
